Swing and French Doors in Steel
The swinging door is the oldest configuration we build and still the right answer for most openings. A single leaf or a pair, hinged at the jamb, swinging in or out — no track in the floor, no stacking space required at the sides, and hardware that will be understood by anyone who uses it.
A French door is the paired version with glass through most of the leaf: two doors meeting at the centre, opening from the middle outward. Where a slider or a bi-fold is about erasing the wall, a French door is about framing the opening symmetrically.
Why Steel Changes the Proportion
The historic French door is a wooden one, and wood dictates its look: stiles and rails wide enough to stay rigid, which is why traditional units read as heavy.
Steel carries roughly three times the tensile strength of aluminum and far more than timber, so the same door can be built with dramatically less frame. You keep the symmetry and the proportion of the original while the glass area grows and the divisions thin out. See the comparison.
It is also why the configuration extends further than wood allowed: taller leaves, full-height lites, and sidelights or a transom carried in the same frame as a combo unit.
Specifying the Swing
Inswing or outswing is a weather and space decision. Outswing keeps the leaf out of the room and sheds water away from the threshold, which favours it on exposed elevations. Inswing protects the door from wind loading and suits a covered entry. The threshold detail and the sill condition follow from that choice — worth settling before fabrication, not after.
