How a Pivot Window Works

A pivot window rotates on an axis through the sash rather than swinging from hinges at one edge. That axis can run horizontally through the middle of the unit or vertically, and because the weight is balanced across the pivot instead of hanging off one side, the sash can be far larger than side hinges would allow.

It is the same principle behind a steel pivot door, applied where the opening is a window: a single oversized sash that turns smoothly instead of several smaller units divided by frames.

Why Specify One

Two reasons, usually. The first is architectural — a pivot window reads as one uninterrupted plane of glass, and in motion it is the most striking operable unit available in steel. The second is practical: on a tall or wide opening, pivoting is often the only way to make the sash operable at all.

Both faces of the glass also come within reach from inside when the sash is rotated, which matters on upper floors where exterior access is difficult.

Sightlines and Structure

Steel carries roughly three times the tensile strength of aluminum, and on an oversized pivoting sash that margin is what keeps the frame from deflecting over years of use while holding profiles as slim as 1 inch. See the comparison.

Because the sash swings through the wall plane on both sides, the reveal and any adjacent finishes need to be coordinated with the rotation — worth resolving on the drawings rather than on site.
