Where a Fixed Window Earns Its Place

A fixed window does not open, and that constraint is exactly what it buys you. With no hinge, no hardware and no operating gap, the frame can be reduced to the minimum the structure requires, and the seal is continuous rather than compressed shut by a latch.

The result is the narrowest sightline and the tightest air seal available in steel — which is why fixed units are specified wherever the view carries the room and ventilation is handled elsewhere: stair walls, gable ends, clerestories, and the large central lites of a wall that has operable units at its edges.

Sightlines

Steel carries roughly three times the tensile strength of aluminum, which is what lets a large fixed lite hold its geometry on a slender frame. HERRERO profiles can be as slim as 1 inch. See the steel vs. aluminum comparison.

Fixed units are frequently combined with operable ones in a single frame rather than set side by side — fewer frames, more glass, one continuous thermal line. See combo units.

Thermal Performance

Large fixed lites mean large glass areas, so the glazing package drives the envelope calculation more than the frame does. Review glass options, and where Title 24 requires it, specify the thermally broken ECO-SKY line. NFRC ratings and labels supplied for permit submittal.
